The top five questions consumers must answer prior to shopping
for floor covering products:
1. Have you accurately measured the room that will receive
floor covering?
Please use a tape measure, not your feet or hands to walk
off the area. Wall to threshold of door and wall to wall.
If bedroom has closet that sets inside the room like
inside a box, then your measurement should automatically include
the closet and there is no need to
measure closet separately. However, if closet sets outside
the box (room) then you must measure it
separately as if measuring the bedroom. Ex. If a room measures
12' x 12' and the closet sets inside this room there is no
need to measure closet separately. But if the closet is an
extension or sets outside this room then measure it. Closet
could measure 5' x 5' or larger, maybe smaller.
2. What type of floor is underneath the existing floor covering?
You must know if it is wood, concrete or whatever. This best
helps determine the need for floor prep
or the type of tack strips needed if for carpet or any other
floor covering. Know your home.
3. Do not remove tack strips if you are going to replace old
carpet with new carpet. Use of existing tack strips saves
time and money. New tack strips will be installed as needed.
Removal of tack strips from concrete floors tends to cause
removal of small sections of concrete so to avoid unnecessary
chipping, leave existing tack strips in place.
4. If you feel the closet floor covering does not need replacing
then do not include in your equation.
5. Always take a pillow or paint sample to the carpet store
when trying to match or achieve a certain
decor. Greens, blues and beiges really look quite different
once side by side, so unless you wish to
have slightly different colors, take samples to compare.
6. Do not be fooled by carpet sold by the foot. Once you add
the footage you will realize the savings are not there. Your
measurements will be calculated to yardage and carpet is sold
by the yard.
Total your room measurements and divide by 9 to get your total
yardage needed. Be safe and go over 5-10 yards. You never
want to be short with any floor covering! The dye lot and
time to order the extra floor covering are not what you want
to frustrate yourself with later.
7. Please buy new floor covering. Too often consumers ask
for used carpet. Who wants someone else's dead skin cells,
germs, dirt, etc. brought into their home or work environment?
No warrantees are given used carpet. In fact, it costs more
to install.
8. Vinyl roll goods are best. Square tiles eventually shift
once water and other liquids get underneath, followed by dirt.
Rolled vinyl covers floor and avoids such problems. Carpet
Depot does not sell or install vinyl squares.
